Signals You Send Your Biology (Part 1 of the long weekend reset)

Labour Day Weekend signals time to be done with things as the year ages. Festivals, summer foods, and style, summer loves and footloose freedom turn to school and office schedules. A caveat for Living to Deadline: strive not to send signals that say you are done in life. Avoid loss and lack in nine key areas. The categories appear in social posts by an alleged 100-year-old Japanese doctor. While the character is likely a fictitious aggregate, the principles are worthy of action and are backed by science.

Consider the foundational premise: your body does not run purely as a clock. It runs on signals such as inputs from behaviour, environment, and mindset. They tell cells and systems whether to keep investing in upkeep or start conserving for a shutdown.

Here are the signals and some action points:

  1. Purpose: the strongest signal on the list

With evidence based in a 2026 meta-analysis pooling nearly half a million participants across 25 studies and up to 32 years of follow-up, we find that people with a stronger sense of purpose had roughly a 30% lower risk of dying earlier than those with less. It blunts the mortality risk that normally comes with declining (self-rated) health. And guess what? It did so consistently whether or not someone had already retired!

To consider: Don’t wait to “find” vague purpose. Attach it to something concrete and recurring, like a person who needs you on a schedule, a piece of work only you can finish, a role in a group. Purpose research finds that the regularity of being needed seems to matter, not the size of the mission.

  1. Cognitive challenge: brains that get used don’t shrink

This one is close to my heart… and my brain, as imaging studies have found that people who spend more time in cognitively engaging activity, not just busy activity, show measurably greater volume across the cortex, hippocampus, and other regions tied to memory and executive function, independent of education level.

A neurologist circled a perimeter in the air around my brain MRI and pronounced a slight shrinkage. It led me to work on a “cognitive reserve.” Building your brain over a lifetime through sustained intellectual effort enables your brain to compensate for age-related or even disease-related damage without losing function.

To consider: Rotate in some new learning that feels slightly hard, like a language, an instrument, a genuinely unfamiliar subject, instead of the same ol’ same ol’ you are good at. The research is specific on this point: novelty and difficulty are what drive the volume change, not just “staying busy.” And guess what? You don’t even have to be good at it… just applying yourself is helpful. Yes, Yoda, try is.

  1. Sedentarism: the body takes disuse literally

Sarcopenia, another new chunk of medical lingo that has fallen on me. The age-related loss of muscle mass and strength is more than a side effect of getting older. Reviews of the mechanism describe physical inactivity as an active accelerant, promoting disuse atrophy on top of whatever changes ageing alone would bring. And it isn’t just aesthetic: muscle loss is tied to frailty, falls, loss of independence, and higher mortality. I don’t want what is on that menu!

At this point, I got up and high-stepped it down the hallway carrying the compost, recyclables, and paper products to the bins and walked backwards once I reached my floor. I chose to enact what I researched and wrote while sitting too long.

To consider: Go for resistance work, not just cardio. The research on reversing or slowing sarcopenia points specifically to resistance training (paired with adequate protein – a thing to watch as we get older) is the intervention of choice. Yes, walking helps circulation and mood, but it doesn’t ask muscle to do the same job.

  1. Sunlight: a real, measurable input

Two separate things happen when sun touches the skin: vitamin D synthesis, and circadian entrainment. Older adults produce vitamin D less efficiently from the same UVB exposure. Deficiency is common in later life as output drops by roughly 13% per decade. On the subject of clocks, we can also note that regular daylight exposure helps stabilize a circadian rhythm that tends to fragment with age. This in turn affects sleep quality, mood, and even measures of cognitive sharpness.

To consider: Morning light, about 20–30 minutes of it, does double duty. It’s heavily associated with circadian benefit, and it’s also safer sun exposure than at midday. The magic is in the light itself, not just the vitamin it produces.

  1. Chronic unresolved stress: taxes the body. Is it real or fake danger? 

Social isolation and unresolved emotional strain seep from their natural home in your head into the body when it shows up as chronic isolation. It can alter gut microbial diversity and raise inflammatory cytokines. Human research on loneliness has found the same inflammatory trail linking isolation-associated proteins to elevated risk of inflammatory bowel disease. The gut-brain axis appears to be a real physical pathway, not a metaphor.

To consider:  It can be tough to clinically “protocol” this option towards health. The research does support: consistent, low-stakes social contact that matters more for this pathway than infrequent, high-intensity connection. A weekly call, as an example, can do more for your inflammatory load than an intense conversation twice a year.

  1. Hydration: kidneys take note before you feel thirsty

Two things decline with age: thirst sensation and the kidneys’ urine-concentrating ability. So, this is why the majority of older adults in national survey data don’t meet fluid intake recommendations. The Kidney Foundation’s own clinical guidance names dehydration as a direct trigger for acute kidney injury in older adults. Even mild, intermittent water restriction has been linked to measurable kidney inflammation and fibrosis over time.

To consider: Drink on a schedule, not on thirst. Fit in a glass with each meal plus two more spaced through the day covers most adults’ needs. Since the thirst signal itself weakens with age, waiting for it is the one strategy the research says specifically not to rely on.

  1. “Comfort” as decay: not just a saying

I first heard this as a TED Talk about the physical body as well as the brain. It is linked to neuroplasticity research, as we learned that cognitive engagement grows brain volume. But achieving plasticity requires sustained effort, and those gains from past learning don’t hold indefinitely without continued use. It’s a “use it or lose it” situation, and you can’t just bank the progress.

To consider: Think of learning as a maintenance habit, like flossing, not a project with an end date. The evidence favours returning to something difficult regularly over cramming it occasionally. Sigh… that’s my life lately.. but I am grateful for the puzzles and the struggles.

  1. Reflexive symptom suppression: a real but narrower claim than it sounds

It’s a mouthful, eh? It’s the idea that the liver and kidneys carry a real clearance burden, and it is legitimate pharmacology. As a senior, I experience it now as concerns around polypharmacy where multiple medications congest (it’s how I visualize it) the organ workload of metabolizing and clearing them out of our bodies. It’s not a case against treatment; it’s a case for noticing when a habit of masking a recurring symptom (with over-the-counter remedies, alcohol, or anything else) substitutes for asking why it keeps recurring. I always challenge my doctors with a question about the source of the problem. I had to send a friend to get Ibuprofen for me… when I was told to take it as a temporary therapy. None in the house on standby.

To consider: When a symptom comes back more than twice, that’s the signal to investigate the cause with a clinician rather than reach for the same fix a third time. By no means avoid a necessary treatment.

  1. Wonder and novelty: the least-studied, most plausible claim on the list

A client paid me the ultimate compliment, years before AI blunted so much mass-produced ‘content’. He said of a 20-part series on Anime that he enjoyed reading my sense of wonder and curiosity. And while people now bandy about dopamine and its social side effect of cynicism, what remains true and as a driver of the brain’s rejuvenation, is novelty-seeking and curiosity. They show up in the literature on cognitive reserve and the beliefs that they drive the brain-volume and plasticity effects. It is accomplished as simply as meeting new people and encountering new places.

To consider: Build brain reserves and plasticity while having fun, visiting new places, making new friends, socializing and never losing your ability to wonder. It’s not just a mood; it is a byproduct of regularly doing new things.

The honest version on the daily 

Don’t aim to outrun the clock. Add quality to your life and just pick one of the nice aspects to agelessness to change deliberately this month. The research consistently rewards consistency over intensity: a daily walk that includes resistance work, a standing weekly call, twenty minutes of morning light, water on a schedule instead of on thirst, one hard new thing kept in rotation.

A chiropractor in Manitoba once wrote on his clipboard on my 2nd new client visit, “inconsistent and non-compliant”. It makes me smile to know that now, on the loosey-goosey West Coast, I am committed to small, repeated signals, sent on purpose, consistently.

It’s not big, draining drama or any mystery doctor’s secret on social post teasers. Just one solo senior sending signals of wellness and wonder.
